FUTURE SUPERMARKET

PAST FUTURE AUTOMATED MARKET

This store design uses automated equipment to allow customers to select from a visual display, receive, and have automatically be charged for products discharged at a single location. Individual customer selection sensitive products are viewed from a hands-on display for them to choose.

This Supermarket of the Future, was based on the concept that "mass marketing" of many items was no longer necessary.  Customers will purchase  standard packaged products without seeing a display of many of the same items on a shelf.  However, items, such as produce, meat, fish, bakery and deli products which vary from one package to the next still require customer scrutiny.

Designed in 1973, the store design includes recycling of organic refuse from the store operation into methane gas and compost.  It also uses an air-delivery option for urban environments so difficult to reach by truck.
